20101027 - RESOLVED - Investigating a problem with mail.chi1.etrn.com

We are currently investigating a problem with the host mail.chi1.etrn.com.  At of 06:30 CDT 10/27/2010 the host mail.chi1.etrn.com is not available via HTTP/IMAP/POP3/SMTP.

Please see below for time-line of events:

08:00 CDT: The problem has been isolated to a failure in a storage sub-system.  A backup storage system has been brought online.  At this time the server is running, but, it is performing slower than normal.  We are continuing to work to correct this issue as well.

17:30 CDT: New storage hardware is scheduled to be installed later tonight.  We expect to start the installation at approximately 21:00 CDT.  The server may be unavailable during part of this time.

21:00 CDT: The new storage hardware is installed and the data migration started.  To complete the install the server was taken off-line from 21:00 to 22:15.

28 Oct 2010 - 05:50 CDT: The data migration has been completed and the server is running on the new storage hardware.  To complete the migration the server was taken off-line from 05:30 to 05:50.

We Answer Your Questions: FAQ

Q: What is the maximum e-mail attachment size?

A: The ETRN.com e-mail servers do not limit the size of individual e-mail attachments. The ETRN.com e-mail servers do impose a 400 MB maximum total message size limit. Individual customers can choose a smaller message size limit. We can also customize the handling of "over-sized" e-mails. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs. A couple of important facts:

1. Attachments are typically encoded in what is called Base64[1]. As a result, the actual length of MIME-compliant Base64-encoded binary data is usually about 137% of the original file size.

2. E-mails often contain both plain text and HTML components. This also increases the overall size of the e-mail.
